Archaeology |

There is a long history of habitation
here and there are a wealth of archaeological
sites ranging from prehistoric cairns and stone
circles to old castles, abbeys and churches.
OS maps mark major sites and many are open to
the public. The Whithorn Dig is a major excavation
(8 miles) on the site of St. Ninian's Church
established in the 4th Century. The dig covers
buildings of varying antiquity and also burial
grounds of Norse habitation. There is also an
interesting museum. |
